Mule

Growth Size

Mules can grow to a length of about 10 – 12cm.

Lifespan

5 – 7 years.

Temperament

These birds are very social, but are too timid for human interaction. They must live in a pair or small group, otherwise they can become depressed.

Training Difficulty

Quite difficult to train, due to their aversion to human handling.

Recommended Owners

Recommended for people who are happy just observing their birds, but aren't looking for a pet that they can hold. Also good for homes that are too small to accommodate larger pets.

Origin

Mules are hybrid birds that are generally crosses between a Finch and a Canary. The practice of crossing these breeds started during Victorian times to produce attractive-looking birds with excellent singing abilities.

Diet

A commercial Finch seed blend supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables. A mineral block should also be provided.

Please note! The dietary guidelines specified above are only a guide and feeding may vary based on your pet's size, activity level, and metabolism.

Grooming

Provide a shallow bowl of water (separate to drinking water) for the Finch to bathe in as it pleases.

Comments

The breeding of Mules is very popular in Europe, and especially Britain. However, the crossing of Canaries with Finches often produces birds which are sterile.
