[Pet of the Month] May 2012 – Hector

Hector the American Staffordshire Terrier, Pet of the Month for May 2012

NAME: Hector
AGE: 3 years
BREED: American Staffordshire Terrier

This month we’d like to introduce you to Hector, the very handsome American Staffordshire Terrier pictured above. Alessandra, Hector’s owner, says he’s a lovely dog, very curious, and is something of a professional when it comes to doing ‘puppy dog eyes’.

If there’s one thing the Americans do well it’s ‘BIG’. And American Staffies are no exception! When English Staffies were first brought to the United States, local breeders decided to increase the weight and jaw strength of the breed. The result was a dog much larger and heavier than their English cousins. Even though both dogs share the same roots, they are now recognised as separate breeds.

American Staffies are very loyal dogs, as well as loving, funny, careless, energetic and alert. They make excellent companions as they form strong bonds with their owners and will do anything and everything along side them.

Unlike most dogs, Hector prefers to be treated with activities, rather than food. His favourite treat is going to the local dog park and retrieving balls thrown for him. He is also quite fond of watching bath water disappear down the drain, or going for car rides.

Hector is fed on a diet of raw chicken necks (which can aid in canine teeth cleaning) and dry food. It is extremely important when providing necks or bones to dogs that they are raw. Cooked bones (especially chicken bones) can splinter when chewed, and cause health problems for your pooch.

Recently on a trip to the park, Hector had his first off leash encounter with the sprinklers. He ran straight for one and started trying to bite the water as it sprayed him – at high pressure – right in the snout! Following the direction of the water, as the sprinkler rotated around, Hector soon found himself needing rescue from a nearby and very dense bush. On the bright side he won’t need a wash for a while!

If you think your pet has what it takes to be our next Pet of the Month, just email any photos or YouTube links of your pet to michael@upmarketpets.com and tell us why they deserve to be Pet of the Month.

Don’t forget, the winner receives a $50 voucher to spend in store at Upmarket Pets! We’d love to see more birds and small animals entering Pet of the Month as well.
